‘Indian Boys’ Original Watercolour
Original framed watercolour of ‘Indian Boys’ by Mrs. N. J. Kerr
There is so much life in this sensitive watercolour entitled ‘Indian Boys’ by Mrs. N. J. Kerr.
It was entered into the RAF Arts & Handicrafts Competition at Finningley, a Bomber Command base near Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
On the back it says several times in pencil that the artist was ‘w/o’, standing for ‘wife of’ Wing Commander J. L. Kerr, although it’s unclear whether that gave her an unfair advantage! However, the quality speaks for itself.
Wing Commander Kerr joined Finningley as a Squadron Leader in October 1953 (possibly staying until 1955) from Number 24 Squadron at Brize Norton and the VIP Transport Service. Finningley was downgraded to a Training Unit for Number 616 Squadron in 1955.
For fans of TV trivia, Finningley was the base ‘destroyed’ by Soviet nuclear warheads in the chilling drama ‘Threads’ and Kerr himself gets a brief mention in the Netflix series ‘The Crown.’
The watercolour is on paper and is simply framed, with original competition labels on the reverse. The frame shows signs of age and is 50.5cm square.
