1800s Victorian Cameo Brooch of the Goddess Hera
Victorian cameo brooch of Hera, Queen of the Gods.
Lovely Victorian Sardonyx shell cameo depicting the Greek goddess Hera. The carving is simple but crisp and charming. It may even be Georgian as it is a very simple setting.
How do I know this is Hera?
She was known as “large eyed” and her crown and veil are traditional signifiers. Also I did look it up on the internet.
As queen of the Gods Hera wears a crown as seen. It is a cylindrical crown known as a polos or Poloi – a crown for mythological figures. Another attribute is a diadem and a veil; both of which our lady is wearing on this cameo.
Hera cameos were very popular throughout the Georgian and Victorian period. As the overseer of birth and marriage she was a popular goddess. What a lovely present she would make.
I believe this one to be Victorian or late Georgian at the earliest.
The pin has been replaced using a steel sewing straight pin from the Victorian period. This was a common fix. I love that someone did that.
The cameo is loose within the frame but secure. It almost looks like it floats.
Fabulous condition for a brooch that is over 100 years old of a 3000 (at least) year old goddess.

I have always collected, worn and loved brooches. They are a quick fix turning an everyday outfit into a fashionable talking piece. Transform last year’s winter coat into this season’s favourite. Want your jacket to become the wedding blazer everyone remembers? Pop on a brooch.
Audra’s Brooches is my unique collection of vintage or antique brooches, pins and clips. I do not change any of the original designs. I simply clean, polish and photograph the pieces before researching their history and style. I also test the pins and safety clasps. My brooches date from 1880 to 1980 and are most often one-of-a-kind. I do sometimes stock multiples of items by particular designers or a job lot of unworn items. These are a rare but exciting find.
I have also created a fashion fix to allow everyone to wear any pin on any fabric. Every brooch is paired with a pad to hold antique pins securely and ensure weighty mid-century pins are supported and sit up properly wherever and on whatever you put them. You can pop the pad behind lapels, inside hats, waistbands, or any of your favourite brooch locations.
Audra’s Brooches. Everything you can pin, clip or fasten to whatever you fancy.
